In August of 1899, Edward (Ewing Aleshire) joined his brother "Jap" and
their first cousin Williams Symmes Matthews of Columbus, Ohio, and their aunt Electa Ewing Howell of Medill, Missouri in attending the first reunion ever of descendants of
James Ewing. That first reunion was held at the farm in Hillsdale Co., Michigan of the late Enoch Ewing, Jonathan's brother/ (pp 948-949)

Believe old hand-written note was written by John Elmer Sullivan whose wife
Alice McCumber was the daughter of Mary Ewing McCumber, sister of Fedelia Ewing
Matthews. Note was received from Helen Sullivan Willits-granddaughter of
John Elmer Sullivan. Alice McCumber Sullivan was legally blind and the handwriting
compares to documents signed by Sullivan. Mary Ewing McCumber was my gggrandmother.

On Sept. 10, 1849, he with his wife and children, George W. and Lucetta,
and one married daughter, Fidelia, who had married Phineas Matthews, and her family,
moved in wagons to Illinois. They arrived Oct.01, 1849, and settled in Hancock, Co.,
near Burnside, where he lived until Sept.03, 1850, when he died of a congestive
chill, aged 60. He lies buried in a cemetary near where he died. His wife, Margaret
survived him 34 years, dying June 14,1884, at the age of 87 years and was
buried in the cemetary near Carthage, IL.( Holland Cemetary)
