John Lowe was the eighth of 12 children and just a small child when his parents started west.
After finally joining the Eli Kelsey Company, they made their way west and finally arrived in the Valley.
John was eight years by the time they arrived. He helped herd cattle and sheep as they crossed the plains. They settled in Palmyra (Spanish Fork) . He was a husky young man and worked at farming, hauling timber, caring for cattle, horses and sheep. By the time his father died, he became the head of the house.
The older children were married. At the age of 19, he moved the family to Paragonah , near Parowan, Utah .
A year later they moved on to Panguitch , becoming the first settlers there. The land was good but there was trouble with the Indians, which resulted in the Black Hawk War. The family left during the war but returned after. John participated in an exploration mission. Butler Wash was named for him.
At a dance one night he was hit on the head, which necessitated an operation to remove part of his skull to relieve the pressure. He recovered. He moved his family to Joseph , then Jerico, Elsinore , and finally Richfield . He spent six months in prison because of his polygamous marriage.
He was a good man and tried to help those around him.
