J. C. Davis Judgement Document
|
This document is signed by J. C. Davis (Jacob Cummingham Davis), one of the original nine charged with the murders of Joseph and Hyrum Smith. He was arrested in Springfield, IL. during a session of the state legislature. The entire Senate voted to order Davis' release. Governor Ford maintained that the Senate's order was unheard of. Numerous pieces of information in "Carthage Conspiracy" (Oaks), and "History of the Church" (Roberts).
William Backenstos, "Jack-Mormon," was the county sheriff who "assured" Joseph Smith that Governor Ford would protect him in Carthage Jail. Other names that appear on this document are Graham Manlove and Spencer.
This is a very rare document.
