Hancock County ILGenWeb
Summons Document 1839

This document lists several prominent local Hancock County citizens; namely, William Smith and George Robinson. Ortho (Otho?) Williams was listed, by Sheriff Backenstos, as one of the murderers of Joseph Smith. Westly Williams was one of the Carthage Greys supposed to have protect Joseph and Hyrum Smith at Carthage Jail. Witter and Mellon (Mellen?) were first flour mill owners in Hancock County. Witter induced the First Presidency of the Church to settle in the vicinity of Warsaw, IL. then he raised the price of a barrel of flour by one dollar (History of the Church)! Much more history to research.

This document has a faint "Hancock Co. Seal" in the lower left hand corner.
This document is a very rare.
