Oak Grove Cemetery , Wythe Township, Hancock County, Illinois

This cemetery burial list for Oak Grove Cemetery of Wythe Township, Hancock County, Illinois was compiled in 1970 by Mr. and Mrs. William King (her name is Irma) who live on a farm in the township.  The Post Office address is R. F. D., Warsaw, Illinois 62379.  They are to receive full credit for this work.

They are members of the Lee County genealogical Society of Iowa, a tri-state society (Iowa, Illinois and Missouri) which is described on the last page of the 1968 Hancock County, Illinois history.

As offered here this constitutes one of the burial lists of the Warren L. Van dine project of collecting lists for all cemeteries of Hancock County, Illinois. A project at this time (1979) which has been carried on for eight years (began in 1962), with which many people are participating with him.

There are two of Oak Grove cemeteries in Hancock County, Illinois.  To avoid confusion please note that this is the Wythe Township one.

The other Oak Grove cemetery is located in Sonora township just above the Sonora Township-Montebello Township lines (across the road from the Golden's Christian Church building which is on the Montebello Township side of the gravel road which constitutes the line.

The other Sonora Township Oak Grove cemetery is sometimes referred to by morticians as Oak Grove (Currey) to avoid confusing it with the Wythe Township one of this list.  That Sonora Township one is also known as Currey Cemetery and in pioneer times it was called the Union cemetery.  By reason of its close proximity to the Golden's Point  Church across the road many people in our time suppose it is a Church cemetery and call it this Golden's Point Cemetery.  Though the members of this congregation refutes this as a falsehood the name has become so fixed in common usage it may well be future generations will come to know if by that.

"The part of theWythe Township Oak Grove cemetery north of the road is in Section 22" according to Mr. and Mrs. King.  "The part south of it in Section 27. "

The rural school building which was built sometime between 1846 when the first such building in Wythe Township was built in 1851 when the First Church (Congregational) was built stood in the northwest corner of Section 27 facing the east-west Road which ran past it on the north side.  This cemetery was next to the school grounds (East) but went a lot deeper to the south.

People of the Oak Grove area held church services in this school house, probably non-denominational. Previous to its construction, they had held outdoor services at this point which was a Wooded part of the township.  Even after the school house became available for this they sometimes held these outdoors, usually in real hot weather.

The writer of this Introduction, Warren L. Van Dine (who is preparing this August 18, 1970, has not yet been to Wythe Township Oak Grove Cemetery of this project.  So a detailed description of the place will not be given here if one should become available at a later date it will be added.

The location of the Oak Grove cemetery of Wythe Township is described by Mr. and Mrs. King is as follows: "Go south of Hamilton on blacktop to Basco blacktop, then 1 mile south and 2 miles east, or 1 mile. south of Elderville and 1/4 mile west. "

(Wythe Township historic sites lists drawn up by the township's site chairman Robert Cochran and the committee made up of Sam Jacobs, Earl Disselhorst, and Robert Allen).

25-20.  Oak Grove cemetery is located on both sides of the road and is a burial place of many Wythe pioneers.  Some effort is made to maintain the part north of the road, the south part is unfenced and many of the stones are fallen and displaced.  Is not possible to identify many of the graves there.
