Married in 1833 and with his spouse, Jane Alexander BRONAUGH, immediately departed for Illinois and settled in Hancock County where they raised a family and lived until 1851, when they sold their land and departed for Oregon by covered wagon. They arrived in Oregon on 10 September 1851, and after receiving a Donation Land Claim, settled on a farm near Lebanon, Linn County. His occupation was that of a blacksmith. He was a Justice of the Peace in Linn County, and a community leader who was one of the founders and backers of the ALBANY STATES RIGHTS DEMOCRAT newspaper. He settled in Silverton, Marion County, Oregon in the mid 1880's and that was his place of residence until his death. He died on 7 November 1903, while visiting his son, John Thomas GILMOUR and his family in Ellensburg, Kittitas County, Washington.
